The Clumber Spaniel was first bred in France in 1768. Clumber Spaniels were initially developed by the Duke of Noailles, who sent them to the Duke of Newcastle, an English family member, so the dogs would be safe from the French Revolution. Clumbers may be descended in part from St. Bernards. Clumbers Spaniels were owned by Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria.
